Is May 21, 2011 the end of the world? Or shall we say, “The beginning of the end of the world”? Could it be that this ‘announcement’ is just one of the end-of-the-world prediction hoaxes this last century? Perhaps not!

I first saw a May 21, 2011 Judgment Day sign painted at the back of the bus plying the South Luzon Expressway many weeks ago. I first thought that it was a schedule of a prophetic conference, but with a catchy sign. My wife insisted that it’s someone’s last days’ prediction – May 21, 2011. But who made that prediction?

As I browsed the net, I can’t help but notice the predicted date – it is gonna be tomorrow.

Rapture Day

The May 21, 2011 Rapture day (Judgment Day) prediction is popularized by Mr. Harold Camping, President of Family Radio. He calculates that the crucifixion of Christ took place on Friday April 1, AD 33. Additionally, multiplying using the same math he uses returns an approximation of the stated results. If you use his date of April 1st, AD 33 to return 1978 years and multiply by 365.2425 you get 722,449.66. If you multiply by 265.2422 you get 722449.07. If you multiply by 265.24219 you return 722449.05. Then if you account for leap seconds each year is slightly longer than the previous. Since 1972 to 2011 the earth rotates 24 seconds slower. This is a difference of .000276 or a year over 39 years meaning the length of each year is not consistent over 1978 years. In 1972 the resulting number would have been 1939 * 365.24246, or 708205.12. To return a result of 722500 in 2011 the length of the year would need to be 0.02575 of a day longer, or 37.06667 minutes longer than it really is. (source: Wikipedia)

Got it? I didn’t really get it. I scratched my head a few times and my eyeballs were scrolling up and down with the calculation. Interestingly in 1992, Camping also predicted that the rapture would take place September 6, 1994. He didn’t exactly get it the first time.

The Rapture refers to the ‘being caught up in the air” as mentioned 1 Thess 4:15-17 when in the end times, Christians will be gathered together to meet Christ in the air. .

15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (NIV)

Do I believe in the rapture? Yes, I do. Is it possible that it will happen in May 21, 2011? I believe it’s possible because no one knows the exact time and day of Christ’s second coming. It can happen in May 21, 2011 or even in December 21, 2012. It can also happen a day before tomorrow.

Are You Ready?

Throughout evangelical churches, Rapture is for the true believers only. Those who are not will be left behind. Atheists have also scheduled their rapture parties on May 21, 2011. There were even those who planned to loot the left behind belongings of those who are “Raptured”. Funny!

The Bible says that Christ will come again like a thief in the night, and surely the end will come. Are you ready? Here’s a song composed by Larry Norman and performed by DC Talk. It talks about the Rapture and those left behind. I wish we’d all been ready.

There will be millions of people who will be hooked on their cable TV sets and PCs this April 29, 2011 to catch a glimpse of the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton at the Westminster Abbey. Some will just be waiting for a Royal Wedding video.

This is such a formal event that no gatecrashers, no paparazzi and no illegal video taking allowed. There are only a few remaining Royalties in this world and there will be lots of feasting on events such as these. I mean that with the latest technologies, any fake Royal Wedding video could look authentic.

Here’s a fake royal wedding video that went viral throughout the world a few days ago. Watch their moves.

After the event, there could be more videos that will sprout all over the internet. Some formal, some funny and some may be satirical. I’m sure the Prince and Princess, if given their way, would have wanted a private event. But they’re royalties, future heads of state, and future ruler of the British Empire. Do you think a private beach wedding fits them?

Today, Google introduces Gmail motion and it is quickly making a few happy rounds in the internet world. People are already tired of their sedentary lives in front of the PC. And perhaps Google recognized the need to put more fun into it. So, how does Gmail motion work?

Gmail Motion uses your computer’s built-in webcam and Google’s patented spatial tracking technology to detect your movements and translate them into meaningful characters and commands. Movements are designed to be simple and intuitive for people of all skill levels.

A printable guide showing all of the body motions that Gmail supports is also provided. With it, Gmail users will be able to start writing and responding to emails – with their bodies– in no time. No mouse, no keyboard. Like magic, isn’t it? Don’t be surprised if you’ll see your officemate acting weird, raising both hands in front of the PC. He’s just doing the gesture for “Reply All”. However, Google also warns that you have to take some break every 30-40 minutes to give your muscles some relief. Check out the video below to learn more of this new feature.

Google added that this new motion detection technology doesn’t stop with Gmail. Google Docs Motion will be coming later this year.

Hey, if it doesn’t work on your PC, just check the date of this post.

I haven’t been around the blogs of the other Philippine bloggers for quite some time now. My blog visits are mostly spent on my own sites, my close friends’ sites, and my group’s sites. Other blogs I used to visit no longer have new updates. A lot of them also changed their blogging directions – from personal to catch-all blogs, which are rather more on news. So, what’s the latest news around the Philippine blogosphere? Here are some of the news I gathered:

1.	iBlog 6 on April 16 and 17, 2010. – This is a two-day event wherein the first day is targeted for entrepreneurs and businesses wanting to tap blogs to promote their products and services. The second day is meant for everyone else interested in blogging. If you are interested in SEO, Gary Viray will speak about it on the first day while on the second day, Marhgil Macuha will tackle the topic. And if you want to see your blogging idol/crush or whatever, this is the time you’d be able to see them in the flesh. Registration is FREE!

2.	Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogger of 2010 – Janette is getting ready once again for the 2010 edition of her writing project which aims to recognize new and emerging blogs that made an impact to its readers in 2010. The writing project will commence in May, so it’s time for us once again to scout on new blogs out there. A lot of my friends won the 2009 edition.

3.	Bloggista.com is for sale – What? When you have a top level domain that could be a household name in Spanish-speaking nations, it’s on the make-money-online niche, and it currently has a PR4 rank and an Alexa rank of 134k, how much would you sell it for? Or will you be selling it? Inside information I gathered was that, a bidder from Europe placed a 6-digit bid. Wow!

4.	Unfriending Darren Rowse in Facebook – You don’t want to pull the plug on someone big and popular, do you? But in his post, Filipino blogger, Jan Geronimo, explained why he did it. Darren, from his territory in the land down under, crossed the Pacific Ocean and offered his explanations too. If you know Darren, you better not skip this one. He left nine comments to top the month’s top conversationalists list.

5.	Jehzlau is Back to Blogging – 47 days after announcing that his blogging days are over, Jehz is back and is giving away prizes to celebrate his return. Wanna win a gadget of your choice? Go, join his contest. But wait, the contest ended the other day. Better luck next time!

The above aren’t the only things happening in the Philippine blogosphere. Supporters of presidential candidates also have their online wars. Yellow vs Orange vs Green. (Noynoy vs Villar v Gibo). As for me, the war I know now is Ninja Warz in Facebook. I can no longer fight my friends Bloggista and Thirdworldgeek because they’re 20 levels below me. Ah, might as well enjoy Razon’s halo-halo to keep away the scorching heat from my system.

The match failed my expectations. I was expecting Pacquiao to demolish Clottey within 6 rounds. But it didn’t happen. Now I have to treat an officemate for lunch at my expense. The whole twelve rounds was a boring fight, and lots of my facebook friends agree. Maybe it would take another twelve rounds to finally bring Clottey down. Why is he so tough? Why isn’t he throwing lots of punches? Why isn’t he fighting? I am not sure of the sentiments of the 50,000 plus attendees at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. They must have expected Pacquiao to win, but not on a boring 12-round unanimous decision.

Clottey’s Defense

Clottey stood in front of Manny with his arms covering his lowered head and a large chunk of his body. It seemed that his pants were raised a bit, exposing only a smaller portion of his hard body. The defense was so tight that even bullets from a Gatling gun couldn’t get through. He arms must be as hard as iron, because no matter how Manny bombarded it with jabs and power punches, it won’t let down.

It wasn’t cowardice on Joshua’s side, as he was not backing out. He was just absorbing the shocks brought about by Pacquiao’s fists. “I really did not feel much of his power” he said in an interview after the fight. “But it is his speed that I’m wary of”.

From the looks of it, it was like Clottey’s aim was not to win but to remain standing at the end of twelve rounds. Remember that the last few great fighters Manny fought had been knocked down. Some even, he stamped their boxing retirement papers. At the end of the day, Clottey can gallantly claim that Manny had not knocked him out. It would be his selling point in the future.

Clottey’s Offense

Clottey connected a few strong punches. He could have outpointed Manny on a few rounds had he thrown a lot of those. His trainer, Lenny de Jesus, urged him to take his chances. They knew that they can only beat Pacquiao through a knockout. But he just hid in his shell.

Pacquiao’s Speed

Pacquiao was relentless in his barrage of punches directed towards the wall of Clottey. A punch connected every time Clottey opened up. It flew from different angles, directed at different parts of the Ghanaian’s open spaces.

Pacquiao’s excellent fitness was evident. He has the same speed from round 1 to round 12 showing no sign of fatigue. I believe that he can still go for another 12 rounds if only to bring Clottey down.

According to statistics gathered by Compubox, Manny threw a total of 1,231 punches as compared to Clottey 399. Percentage-wise, Pacquiao landed 20% while Clottey landed 27%. As to power punches, Pacquiao threw 682 of them connecting 34%. These are career-high records for Manny.

Boring Fight

I knew we expected a lot from Manny. He didn’t fail us though. He even tired to make us all laugh. It was the other side of the equation that didn’t give us all the boxing we deserve. Or maybe we should blame Bob Arum for putting up an opponent who’s not entertaining enough, and who’s not boxing enough. It should have been a brawl, and not like a game of chess.

Other Matters

If any of you tried to search online for results, analysis or live video streaming and ended up getting frustrated because the first few pages of Google search gave you sites that are either annoying or confusing, blame SEO. Or shall we say the ugly side of it. The legit sites and better-written articles were nowhere near the top pages you know. And it’s now time that they learn it.

U2 free live streaming on Youtube from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This is good news for fans worldwide. They can view the concert for free, minus the sweat of course. One band, one stage. The first global webcast concert. Aside from being free, this one is legal too.

This is what they say in their official website:

U2 have confirmed via video blog that their sold-out concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, this Sunday, 25th October, will be streamed free, in full and live on YouTube. It’s the first time a show of this size will be streamed live.

The Rose Bowl show is the penultimate U2 show this year – with more to come in 2010 – and already is set to host the venue’s biggest ever audience of over 96,000 fans. The 360° Tour, which has been critically acclaimed and ‘re-invents rock’n'roll’ (Rolling Stone Magazine), will now boast unique access for fans worldwide – as fans in territories yet to be visited by the tour, or not at all, will be able to enjoy the whole show online.

Folks from the Philippines, Hongkong, Taipe and Singapore, you can start watching the U2 live stream by 1130am on Monday. You might be at work then, but real fans know what to do.

I have been a converted U2 fan since that day I bought and album. Beautiful Day is one of my favorite songs. You just don’t like the music only but the lyrics as well. Beautifully composed and with a wonderful message behind it! Here is the lyrics to Beautiful Day, the one played in the youtube video.

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There’s no room
No space to rent in this town

You’re out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you’re not moving anywhere

You thought you’d found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace

It’s a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away

You’re on the road
But you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if that doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over
And it’s been all over you

It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
It’s a beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Teach me
I know I’m not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
Beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I’m not a hopeless case

What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
Don’t need it now
Was a beautiful day

—
Miss Earth is an annual Filipino-based international beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness. This is the first time that a candidate from the host country won the event.

Although this is quite a late news, the objective of this post is to experiment optimizing the phrase: Beautiful Cebuana. Let see how this post fare in SERP.

But, there really are plenty of beautiful Cebuanas in Cebu and all over the world. They’re far more beautiful than those in the pictures you see on the dating sites.

p.s. (i don’t know whom to thank for the picture above)

Hurricane Gustav, a category 3 storm that had already damaged the Caribbean and killed 94 people in its path, is expected to land at New Orleans today.

With the devastating effects of Katrina and Rita in 2005, there is no other choice this time. Even for a nation as advanced as the USA, evacuating 2 million people is necessary. The people on the path of Hurricane Gustav should immediately evacuate or risk their lives. Strong winds at 115mph and increasing, heavy storms and flooding, zero-electricity; these are all expected in this kind of situation.

If a hurricane like this hits the Philippines, evacuation would not as easy as we think of.
We’ve already heard of sad tales, ship sunken, flooded roads and communities washed out. The usual thing to do is to brace for the coming typhoon. This list might be of help in order to survive a typhoon in the Philippines:

1.	Constantly monitor the news. A transistor radio (battery operated) is the best friend of those in the country-side. Always check local advisories.
2.	Store gasoline or kerosene, LPG or dried wood. Electricity would surely be out for days.
3.	Store food. Canned goods and ready-to-eat, if necessary.
4.	Store Water. No electricity, no water.
5.	Store medicines, at least for two weeks.
6.	Secure valuable documents in water-proof containers if necessary.
7.	Bring enough cash.
8.	Secure your home. Lock it. Brace it. Cover the doors and windows with boards. Reinforce the roof as it is usually the first to be flown away.
9.	Avoid trees and electricity posts.
10.	Ready your emergency kit. This includes flashlights, batteries and other supplies.
11.	Transfer to structures/building with a more solid foundation. It could be your neighbors’ house or the evacuation center identified by community leaders. An ordinary nipa house, or a shanty can’t survive strong typhoons.
12.	Avoid flood-prone areas, most especially seaside and or riverside areas.
13.	Turn off electricity.

If you have money, flight south. Most of Mindanao will not be hit by typhoons. Again, it goes back to evacuation.

Final medal count is 0-0-0 for the Philippines. And it had been like than in the last three Olympics. We’ve lost in all the other sports we’ve taken part of, while China and the USA are breezing it through like they own the sporting world. The Taekwondo jins were our last medal hopes. But they failed. The last medal chance in Mary Antoinette Rivero for Taekwondo never produced any good result as she was outpointed by Sandra Saric of Croatia this morning (8/22/08). The other day Tshomlee Go was eliminated early by Ryan Carnelli of Australia. Diver Ryan Rexel Fabriga, the last of the 15-man Philippine to play, ended up at 28th place.

Here’s the updated medal standings for the 2008 Beijing Olympics leading nations as of today.

The table updates itself everytime you visit here. As of today, our fiercest rivals in the SEA games are doing well, with Indonesia garnering more medals.

Indonesia 35th place – 1 Gold in Badminton, 1 silver in Badminton, 1 bronze in Badminton and 2 bronzes in Weightlifting

Thailand 38th place – 1 Gold in weightlifting, 1 silver in Taekwondo

Malaysia 60th place – 1 silver in badminton.

What is wrong with Philippine sports? That is not for me to answer. I am sure that our sports officials will have a lot of soul-searching to do when they get home empty-handed.
