Very Easy Way To Upgrade Your WordPress Version
There is a very easy way to upgrade your WordPress version. How? That same question lingered in my brain for more than a year. I tried to seek the answer but got lost in the jungle of techie instructions. I was also afraid of losing my precious posts should I make a false move. First it was 2.5. Then it was 2.6. and 2.7. And now it’s 2.8.4. Can you guess what version I was using prior to this upgrade?
In one of the outings of the influenza bloggers, the discussion touched on the issue of WordPress version upgrade. Bloggista, Lyle and the Third World Geek laughed when I told them that mine was still running on version 2.3.3. That thing is very obsolete and is already bound for extinction. They mentioned plug-ins, Fantastico, etc…etc…
Embarrassed of my being a WordPress noob, (and to think I planned to attend the Wordcamp this September 19), I tried working my way to upgrade the thing myself. But good thing my best blogging buddy, Third World Geek offered his services. So, with a coffee on hand, at The Coffee Bean in the jungle of Makati Business District, we made a move to bring me out from the mire of WordPress version obsolescence.
First, we tried Fantastico in my Cpanel. There used to be a one-click upgrade in there. My other blog had one. But poor me, the Fantastico says that I had no WordPress installed in my Blog From Cebu to the World. What? They’ve already abolished 2.3.3?
So the next step was to search for the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plug-in. Here is what it says:
WordPress Automatic Upgrade allows a user to automatically upgrade the WordPress installation to the latest one provided by WordPress.org using the 5 steps provided in the WordPress upgrade instructions.
WordPress automatic upgrade upgrades your WordPress installation by doing the following steps.
Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
Downloads the latest files from http://WordPress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
Puts the site in maintenance mode.
De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
Upgrades WordPress files.
Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
Re-activates the plugins.
The plugin can also can be run in an automated mode where in you do not have to click on any links to go to the next step.
After nervously following the instructions, I finally made it. From WordPress 2.3.3 to WordPress 2.8.4. What a giant leap for this blogger! It took me a year really. And to think it was this easy to upgrade WordPress to the latest version. My thanks to Third World Geek and to the creators of this plug-in!

Thanks for the tips about this! I’m in the same boat: I want to update my Wordpress site, but I’m terrified to do so, for fear of losing all of my posts. I’ll have to give this a shot.

Wew! Finally! Hahaha. You only need the automatic plugin if you’re below WP2.7
Once you’re in 2.7, Wordpress already included the automatic update feature. It informs you there’s a new version and just click on the link – just one click, and you’re updated, unlike the automatic upgrade plugin you have to go through a series of steps.
But then again when you’re at 2.3, its your only easy option.
