Social Networking Revisited
The other day I added 113 people in MyBlogLog. Do I know all of them? In my 3 years of blogging, I bumped into their blogs at least once. Some of them are even in the blogroll of my other blogs. And some had been like pals some months back.
Some of them I used to visit and comment on, not as Ceblogger, but as some other names, which only a few are privileged of knowing. But hey, why network anonymously? These are just aliases you see. I have a pic now at the bottom of page, and I have pic in my twitter and in the other social networks I joined in.
Offline, I had my own social network. Though I am not the kind who present myself to just anyone, I won’t hide either. Online social networking is the “in” thing these days if you have a blog or a website. Remember Friendster and the hundreds of friends that you have? Ok, so Friendster must be too juvenile for you. What about Multiply, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, MyBlogLog, MyBlogCatalog, Technorati, Digg, StumbleUpon, and all the other new and upcoming sites out there?
Honestly, I’ve entered too late into this social networking thing. I haven’t really attended some blogging meets but I’ve met a few bloggers in real setting. Bloggista and Thirdworldgeek are regular eating and drinking buddies. Talking to them brings you to some heights you’ve never imagined possible. Make money here, make money there. Network here, network there. And the possibilities are endless even if you are creating a social networking site for pets. The latter part made me miss the last pet that was close to me, Dober (some personnel from the city pound got him years back). Network or Die, says one of the post of the Thirdworldgeek.
My cousin in Palawan is also busy promoting his site. He’s got more than a thousand followers in Twitter and some 43 people in MyBlogLog. And he also got a free hosting courtesy of an online friend, An American in Davao. Oh well, social networking at it’s best.
I should have mastered all of these early in my blogging career. Three years of blogging and extensive site promotions should have made me famous by now. But fame is not my game. Let’s just network and be friends.

Ceblogger is a CPA trapped in his cubicle while his mind wanders outside watching the world, and exploring possibilities his mind conceived.

I actually love the power of Social Networking site because the blog is capturing a lot of audience. But just like you, I can’t possibly visit them in one sitting!

I am on MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, BlogShowcase and I also joined LinkReferral, EntreCard, Agitize.
And what did that get me? Not much.
In Linkreferral you get links by visiting 30 blogs and also by reviewing 5.
So, what did I do? I did a search, such as Expat and right clicked and opened 30 blogs. Then closed most. I would find 5 I could review.
What did I get in return? The same thing. Many Hits that were on my site for 00:00 and one page view.
So because of that your bounce rate goes up, your visitor to pageview ratio goes down and nobody wants to advertise or you get the cheapest ones.
What you need is Good Content, regular entries and quick answers to comments.
Make regular readers want to come back and new visitors want to read old posts. Then they will tell friends who will tell friends.

Something else to add about your cousin in Palawan’s BLog. I found him through the following way.
To promote my site I search for blogs by Expats, Filipinos in the Philippines and Filipinos abroad.
I read some of their posts and if I feel their site is a site I would enjoy reading, I make a comment if something I feel something about, not just to comment. I mention about being an Expat in the Philippines too. Then I hope they will visit and enjoy. Most do not bother.
I read your cousins blog and enjoyed it. Then getting to know him better I thought of myself at his age (before computers) and how I wished there was someone to assist me to improve my life.
Since I have unlimited domains, bandwidth and storage on my hosting service, I decided to offer help to him. The rest is history. Your readers can read it all at http://www.americanindavao.com and http://www.palawananecdotes.com
Thanks again for mentioning me on your site.

bruce, i’ve done a lot of experiments in all my other blogs. there were signs of success. but it’s in sustaining them is which i encounter problems. offline work gets into the way, and the frequent downtimes this blog encountered in the past compounded the problem.

Networking online and offline takes time. And like any relationship you have to invest in it but you will be greatly rewarded. You’re right Ceb, networking should also be a way to find friends not only online buddies.
