Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao: Fight Results Predictions
This is not a sports blog, but it does not mean that I will not write about sports. I will, especially if its concerns the most famous Filipino athlete today: Manny Pacquiao, current WBC Lightweight Champion. He is scheduled to fight Oscar De La Hoya, the famous Golden Boy, and champion of six different weight classes, on December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. They will fight at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.
UPDATE: Pacquiao won via TKO at the end of round8. It was such a mismatch, contradicting the predictions of many boxing experts. I was shocked to see De La Hoya moving so slow, making an easy target of the strong punches of the Pacman.
I’m sure the sports scribes and even the lowliest of fans already had some sort of predictions and analysis forming in their minds. So, who do you think will win this fight? What is your fight results prediction?
Oscar Beats Manny
By sheer size alone, Oscar has the advantage. 5’10” vs 5’6”, and a reach advantage of 6 inches. Ricardo Lois has this to say in his open letter posted at boxingconfidential.com:
“Let me make one more thing clear as a whistle. Manny Pacquiao will lose December 6. He does not have the size, defense, or power to stop a much bigger man. The moment De La Hoya lands a left hook to the head (brain), or a straight right hand, the dynamics of the bout will change and Manny will go down.
I will also make it clear that this fight is a complete joke and there is no true tension and it lacks as a display of competition.”
“No way Pacquiao can win,” boxing legend Thomas Hearns said, adding that the fight could be over for the Filipino in four or five rounds.
Even the forumers (boxing fans or not) at Istorya.net, a leading forum in the Visayas and Mindanao, predicted a Dela Hoya win. Their poll shows 55% are predicting an Oscar victory.
Of course, these predictions won’t sit well with diehard Pacman fans. But plenty can live with it, hoping that Manny will still be in one piece after the beating.
Manny Defeats Oscar
Many Pinoy fans hope and pray for Manny to win despite not being confident of the outcome. I, too, hope he’d take the lights out of the Golden Boy. Perhaps with a lucky punch or probably a left hook or an uppercut that would deform more than Oscar’s hairstyle. A David downing Goliath is very much possible.
Speed is the key, they say of Pacquiao’s edge over De La Hoya. Can you down a big man with speed alone? I don’t think so. But Manny has the power in his punches, and the prayers of his mother and perhaps a good percentage of the Filipino nation. Hope is all we are left right now.
A victory for Manny is actually good for the Filipinos. It means that he will keep on boxing, fighting guys like Hatton, Marquez, and perhaps a De La Hoya rematch, bringing more glory for the country. (Let’s forget about money just this time). It also means that he will also stay away for politics for a while, considered by many as a suicide for his career.

Bro,
I too think that this fight is no less than a joke. I’m not buying their publicity stunt. Sorry to Oscar and Manny. I like both guys but their meeting on the ring is a clear mismatch

i like the underdog tag for Manny! even in the UFC, i can remember full well the royce gracie fighst against bigger opponents.
September 25th, 2008 at 5:34 am
i think so too. Oscar seems to be getting the upper hand on this one.

I agree that this is a great mismatch in favor of Oscar, and this was made as a good circus to watch.
However, we must not forget that Oscar will have to reduce his weight which can make him weaker.
We must also remember that Manny is an intelligent fighter, and he can easily give up when he cannot take the punches anymore.
I am NOT expecting Manny to win, but I know he will do his best to entertain the audience.
It is just sad that the real winner of this fight is the one who will place the biggest best.
Kahit itanong mo pa sa dating best friend ni ERAP lol!

thanks for link, angel.
A congressman is seeking legal means to stop manny from fighting de la hoya. but we’ve seen a lot of mismatches in some other fights. this could not be one of them.

Never under-estimate the under dog it’s huge posibility. I am sure Manny and he’s team double up there effort — if Manny lose, kibit balikat because he’s opponent is veteran and reason is mis-match but if he wins it’s a HUGE pride of pinoy.

I don’t know if I’ll shell out $50 to watch this match. Dela Hoya is in the twilight of his boxing years and he hasn’t really performed well in his last few bouts. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think he lost in most of his bouts these last couple of years.
As for Manny, I hope he still wins just to save himself from the embarrassment of losing a joke of a fight.

iris, some people are questioning the motives of both fighters (and their promoters). but i think this one is huge and worth watching.
Pan, I’d like to watch this fight live, if given the chance.

i am a big fan of manny. but i don’t see that this fight will do any good for him. aside from a probable loss to de la hoya, i fear for his life and safety. i cringe at the thought of him beaten black and blue.

the funny thing is.. all the PACHUGS believe Manny can KO Oscar.. not impossible though.. but near impossible…
the fact is .. Trinidad, Mosley, Vargas, Gatti, Chavez, Mayorga was not able to KO Oscar.. says it all

bingskee, there are officials who’d look after pacquiao (or de la hoya). he won’t get killed. he’d probably have a blackeye. it’s nothing compared to a thick bucks.
Iskolares, they call it faith. hehe. manny kayoed fighters never been knocked out before their meeting.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
but those are guys in light flyweight, flyweight, featherweight and superfeatherweight…
do you think if Mayorga punched those boxers too they wont get Ko’d? LOL Mayorga was not able to KO dela hoya even with his power..

[…] The Filipino people are worried for Manny. Some people in Congress would even want the fight cancelled, saying they are concerned for the safety Philippine boxing icon. What if Oscar’s left hook damages the brain of Manny? What if a straight would break his skull? What if….? Ok, what if Manny’s punch would make Oscar lose a tooth or two? Of course, there are so many fight results predictions. […]

Of course Pacquio will lose cuz it will be the first time that he will fight someone who has a decent past record, and not just a third rate fighter with a spotty win/loss record. Pacquio has had victories over not very well respected fighters. It’s about time to see him try a real fight for once in his career, and try to live up to his over hyped “national hero” undeserved status. Pacquio fans are trying to make up excuses before the fight so that they can hide from the reality that Pacquio isn’t, and never has been as good a fighter as people like to believe. And, yeah great “national hero”, a great role model for children. Pacquio with his wife and many, many girl friends. Adulterous “hero”. That’s what you want your kids to look up to. Very sad!!!

Manny Pacquiao will win this fight if he will bring his belief with Jesus Christ above the ring. This fight is not comparing by physical, techniques, by ages, and determination to win. But for Manny this fight was the greatest challenge with him to fight between money and believing Jesus Christ to defeat anyone in the ring. If Manny will always have a big heart and generous to the poor filipino people, thanksgiving to the God, and believing that wealth was not took by his own hands of dreaming it to have but by believing God that he has everything to owned right now because of his sincerety, loving and generous person with his neighbor, for filipino people and country philippines.
Beleived it or not this fight is like somewhere else David and Golaith. This fight is all for Manny if he will purely embraces and praises God. I am sure Dela Hoya will see what was the big different from him and all the boxers in the world compared by faithful man who hearthly beleived with Jesus Christ MANNY “PACMAN” PACQUIAO”.
Please don’t forget to watch with your two eyes once upon Manny inside the ring he will kiss his two hands and leaf-up his hands above and bring his eyes up in heaven and nailed down the corner, that means Manny will win.
MABUHAY ANG FILIPINO and GOD will bless this fight.
Your brother beleiving Jesus Christ, Thank you.

Funny… seeing your predictions above made me realized that there is no such thing as “impossible” as long as you believe… and that’s how I saw Manny - humbly believed that he can win this fight… and HE DID. Congratulations Manny! Seems like after your beating of Dela Hoya, a lot of people are still in Shocked.=)You deserve everyone’s respect when it comes to boxing.
