Philippines in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Medal Standing
Final medal count is 0-0-0 for the Philippines. And it had been like than in the last three Olympics. We’ve lost in all the other sports we’ve taken part of, while China and the USA are breezing it through like they own the sporting world. The Taekwondo jins were our last medal hopes. But they failed. The last medal chance in Mary Antoinette Rivero for Taekwondo never produced any good result as she was outpointed by Sandra Saric of Croatia this morning (8/22/08). The other day Tshomlee Go was eliminated early by Ryan Carnelli of Australia. Diver Ryan Rexel Fabriga, the last of the 15-man Philippine to play, ended up at 28th place.
Here’s the updated medal standings for the 2008 Beijing Olympics leading nations as of today.
The table updates itself everytime you visit here. As of today, our fiercest rivals in the SEA games are doing well, with Indonesia garnering more medals.
Indonesia 35th place – 1 Gold in Badminton, 1 silver in Badminton, 1 bronze in Badminton and 2 bronzes in Weightlifting
Thailand 38th place – 1 Gold in weightlifting, 1 silver in Taekwondo
Malaysia 60th place – 1 silver in badminton.
What is wrong with Philippine sports? That is not for me to answer. I am sure that our sports officials will have a lot of soul-searching to do when they get home empty-handed.

“What is wrong with Philippine sports? That is not for me to answer. I am sure that our sports officials will have a lot of soul-searching to do when they get home empty-handed.”

it is sad. to be a country with so many intelligent, talented people, and yet to not have even one medal. i do hope that some soul searching will take place, as opposed to mere pointing of fingers.

if there is goin’ to have a sports such as grafting category in wrestling division or corruptology in running, surely we’ll goin’ to get most of the gold medals…yahoo.
August 19th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
that is sad… i hope the gov’t will support our athletes. i guess that’s one of the things lacking - support.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:22 am
I hope they can get one

I had an argument with my uncle, I said Philippines joined Olympics and he said no. He was on to it, everyda he watched the games, now I know why he thought we’re not part of the big games, because we get nothing. Sad…

I’m a sport person and seeing the Philippine team empty handed is a very big frustration not only to myself but to my country. We should be dominating SEA but damn we’re not even on the tally board. On the bright side there is still one more chance as I wrote this message. Go Taekwondo jins!

mike, thanks for this very useful medal table.
carey, it’s so sad. Like we didn’t participate in the olympics at all.
scatterhaiku, there are brilliant minds in the philippine sports.I just hope they’ll have a program for the long term. Even Vietnam has a medal to boast of.

jason, there should be no room for politics in sports. But these can’t be avoided in a nation like ours.
smokey_eyes, not only the government but the private sector as well.
lhurey, we only have one left standing. Mary antoinette will fight on friday.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:37 am
melai, seems like we’ve really not participated. haha. your uncle almost has a point.
rcanoy, our SEA neighbors have medals (even singapore and vietnam). We got none. Tshomlee just lost his match.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:33 am
why is billiard and bowling not an olympic sport? we will surely dominate that area…
August 20th, 2008 at 6:47 am
ian, these two used to be included as exhibition sports in the past olympics. for them to be included, their world governing bodies should lobby for the sport in the IOC. We have bigger chances in these two sports.
August 20th, 2008 at 9:39 am
perhaps soon, we definitely have a long way to get the gold medal. For now, let’s just China for a wonderful hosting of the games.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
this is sad. hopefully we’ll be able to get even one.

Our Olympians is good in their field but i think others are much better than they are… don’t blame the official for bad performance of the Athletes but if they have favoritism in selection process then maybe put some blame on them…
August 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
in need of massive improvements pa jud atong mga athletes…dunno unsa nga klase nga training ilang giundergo…hahaist faet…gergero jud ta…hihi…
August 24th, 2008 at 5:54 am
At least we have a gold in wushu. As I have said in my post sa blog ko, I partly blame the officials. Sila sila nga eh nagtuturuan kung sino dapat sisihin. Our sports program needs improvement talaga. Opinion ko lng yun ha. And syempre siguro other athletes are just better than ours. I’m sure they did their best but “their best wasn’t good enough”.

it’s not in the priorities of our government - that’s what’s wrong. and i don’t see it coming in the next couple of years ‘coz there are much more important things to deal with/strengthen in this poor country like health, education and yes, even population growth. i’m no longer left in shock with the results. it’s a pity how even relatively more unpopular countries (how many ordinary folks know about azerbaijan or uzbekistan?) have medals to be proud of. *sigh*

We were spreading our efforts to thinly.

I am very of our FILIPINO Athletes, may medal man o wala. At least they went our there, tried their best and show the world that we can compete. Who cares if we have 0-0-0 standing, the important is we have someone represented our country. (taking about SUPPORT? Huh!)

If you would believe Daniel Johnson, then I’d say its because of our economy. Read about the economics of olympic medals at my blog: http://musingsofayoungeconomist.co.cc

In totality, we win some, we lose some. Although in Olympics we lost all the games but we have to remember, there are some areas in talents that we truly excel. Charice Pempengco and Lica de Guzman proved how great Filipinos are in the field of music. When they sing, the world listens. We should not forget that Philippine All Stars just won the gold in the World HipHop Dance Championship. People from 33 different countries gathered in Vegas in hopes to win the gold but Filipinos disappointed them. We can’t win ‘em all but in another side of the coin, we can rightfully shine.

There are a lot of things that we must focus on than sports, this olympics, if every filipino eats three times a day, can go to school and live in a decent house then we can dream for an olympic gold. We have a lot of coping up to do.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Although it’s unfair to say, but the Philippines did laid an egg in the Bird’s Nest. We don’t have real sports program. Its all about “palakasan”. If you are well connected with certain Politicians, then you get the chance to play in the Olympics and other sports events.

sports is not everything. for some, a mere participation in the olympics is already an achievement. For our country, the goal is to bring home at least a medal. We won in wushu alright (an exhibition sport), a gold, a silver and two bronzes. Shouldn’t we be proud, too?

EXCELLENCE can only be achieved if we as people of this humble nation will strive for it. The lack of discipline (basura dito, basura dun, sariling basura di maitapon ng tama), rampant corruption (from the lowest to the highest position, halos lahat nangungurakot). EXCELLENCE starts with us but if we will not change our standings will never change, we will remain as losers. To all Filipino athletes.. MABUHAY!

Owww. That’s a game. Sometimes we lost and sometimes we win. the important thing is we all do our best.
