Negative SEO and Keyword Bastardization

Have you ever heard any of the two phrases in my above title? The first one is not really something new. It has been around the net for many months now but the phrase just popped into my head yesterday. The latter might just be of my own making. But tell me if there is a better term for it.

Negative SEO

…is simply an SEO technique that pushes a website out of the search engine rankings (or deep into limbo of Google SERP). How could that be? If it is unintentionally done and you are doing it for your site, it could be over-SEO. It happened to many of the over-eager SEO enthusiasts. And Google will penalize you for that. One day you’re on top, the next day you’re nowhere.

My Blog’s New Look

Promdiblogger once commented that my site does not look good in her browser. Though I was aware of it when I accessed my blog in internet cafes, I did not really mind because it looked good in my laptop. I love the color combination of the wezine theme and it really fits my taste. I thought that it was probably perhaps of the outdated browsers, most particularly IE, that made my site look bad. I did not also mind the disarrayed snapshot of my blog at Stumbleupon.

I am not a blog fashionista like my friends Thirdworldgeek and Sasha, who change themes more often. Blog design is very important too. And I’d like to have a site that is presentable and nifty-looking in all browsers.

Emerging Influential Blogs of 2008

How do you consider one as an influential blog? I read Ms. Janette Toral’s attempt to answer this question. I do agree that it is a tough question and I don’t think there is a single description that fits all.

I was already blogging during the first edition but really did not mind the project (and all other happenings around the blogosphere at that time). It was just me, my blog, and the few people in my blogroll.

But I happened to read the results because a few of the winners were in my blogroll. Like the others, I was surprised. Some people were very vocal about their disagreement, and I may have even agreed then with the points they raised. Is it popularity or influence? 2007 is behind us now and everyone has moved on.

June 2008 Nursing Board Exam Topnotchers from Cebu Schools

The June 2008 Philippine Nursing Board Exam Results was already released late last night. 27,765 examinees or 43.07% out of the 65,459 who took the exam last June 1 and 2 passed. The exams were held in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.

I first learned of the results last night from examinees who congratulated each other at Velez College, Cebu while accompanying my wife, an alumna of that school, who attended the wake of the school’s longest-serving nursing dean.

More than 100 examinees made it to the top 10. Topnotchers from Cebu schools are as follows:

Why Should I Link To You?

I don’t know how you value links. But for some, getting a link from another site is of much value. Much more if that link comes from sites with high page ranks. You know the page rank, monetization, SERP and all those blah blah blahs about it.

But there are others who don’t link for the page rank. They give and take links but just for the sake of having links, and nothing more. Yeah, more of the socializing thing. However, we also have to take note that Google penalizes blogs giving out too much links and those who sell links that passes page ranks. As to how much is too much really depends on Google.

Why should I link to you? I know that a lot of bloggers are not very generous with their links, but I will just answer that question with my very own experience. And they are really very simple reasons.

Scam, Spam, Sham

Oh! They do rhyme. But I don’t like it when my emails and my comment moderation queue are filled with scams, spams and shams.

Email

How many times have I won the lottery? If I believe my emails, I won everyday. What a wonderful world that would be! Oh common, let me wake up to reality. But how do we stop those spams? I list down some ways here, but there really is no way to totally stop spam:

UP Cebu High School Grand Reunion

I am going to meet some of my high school classmates tomorrow as we celebrate the centennial celebration of the University of the Philippines. Yes, there will be a grand reunion for our high school. Some bloggers I know, but have not met, also came from that school. I do not know who among my classmates will show up, but I’ll just be there.

It is 17 years since we moved out from the high school campus. Some just crossed the other side of the road to continue their college course. Some had moved to the bigger schools in Manila (UP Dil, La Salle and Ateneo) and some, like me, transferred to other schools in Cebu (USC, CDC, Velez). We all followed different paths, found new friends and new lives. Read the rest of this entry »

For Whom Do You Blog?

This question floated in my mind for sometime now along with the question as to why do I blog. Am I just blogging for myself or for someone? Are the bloggers in my circle blogging for their selves, for search engines or for the readers like me? Or are we just rambling words, typing and conversing with ourselves and the PCs?

Maybe you who happen to read this may have a ready answer in mind. Or maybe you don’t, and is facing a dilemma as to what you should write because a particular group wants this, and another wants that, and you want to blog about your love life. Maybe your blogging idol wrote something that seems like telling you not to blog about your personal life because it is uninteresting. Or it could also be that someone barges in to your site and tells you not to blog about SEO and money making because you are not an expert on it or that you have no real blogging earnings to boast of.

EC Love and Easy Link

EC love and easy link I give to my top 10 Entrecard droppers. I’ve done this a month ago, and I am doing it again this month. I’m giving 50 entrecard credits to my top 5 and 20 for the next 5 top droppers for the last 30 days.

But to make things more exciting next month, I’ll reward my top 3 droppers with 300, 200 and 100 entrecard credits. Of course, there’s the usual link in the post. If there’s a tie, the won credits will be divided equally. I will not be anymore giving a link or credit to the rest of the top 10, but I’ll give them a chance to win a week of 150×150 ad space. Among the top 10, I’d randomly select a winner. That would really be of help for your blog promotions.
