Can A Blogger Be Considered A Writer?

Online dictionaries define a writer as “someone who writes creatively or professionally”. Then on the next line (definition no. 2) is the all-inclusive: “Someone who has a written output”.

I don’t have to assume I’d fit in the first definition because my day job involves accounting. Though I may have some posts in my other blogs that generated dollars for my paypal, and one cebuano short story that reached print in the inner pages of a local tabloid, I still feel inadequate.

I have very high regards for writers, especially the creative ones. I even wish that the definition ends there to put a distinction in their profession.

But there is definition 2 where we all fit. Even a 9 year old kid who writes an essay for his formal theme, or that spinster who keeps a secret diary under her bed can claim that he/she is a writer. Every blogger can assert that he is writer, though some could not really digest that. Whether we like it or not, we are writers because of that definition. Not necessarily a good one, but still a writer. But I’d be happy with my blogging, even without the “writer” tag. And you should too. Who knows one day, we’d be recognized because of what we write in our blogs.
